Social Media Marketing is no longer optional for growing and scaling your business.

Even if your business is brick & mortar and you don’t sell anything online, you still need to be working on building your brand online and connecting with people.

Why?

Social media makes it very easy to promote your business.

You can use it to offer discounts and insights into your products and services, and the best part of it is that you can potentially reach hundreds of thousands of potential customers very cheap, if not completely free if you do it right.

Don’t believe me, check out this article on Medium about how Kylie Jenner leveraged content marketing and social media to build a $900 million dollar cosmetic line in just 3 years, without spending a dime on paid advertisement.

While you let that sink in and maybe you’re not entirely convinced that social media is not for your type of business, go to any social media platform like Facebook or Instagram, and look up your local competitors.

I’m 100% sure that at least a few of them are using every social media platform out there to build their brand online and connect with potential customers.

So, why are you not doing the same?

According to a 2019 study by Brandwatch:

  • Facebook boasts a whopping 2.375 billion daily users
  • YouTube has 1.9 billion users
  • Instagram has one billion users
  • LinkedIn has 610 million users
  • Twitter has 330 million users
  • Snapchat has 190 million users

What does this mean to you?

It means that the more you sit back and don’t take it seriously, your competitors will keep stealing your current and potential customers.

Your competitors are developing relationships with your potential customers, they are interacting with them and are giving them massive value, you are not.

You should NEED to be in their face daily providing massive value, so every time they think about the type of product or service you offer, they immediately think of you, not your competitors.

Let me explain it differently to make sure it makes sense to you: If your business isn’t location-dependent, you can reach customers thousands of miles away through social media. And you can establish yourself as a thought leader in your industry.

Now that you understand why is important to have a social media presence, I want to make sure I also address a common misconception.

Posting a few updates on Facebook or Instagram about your business without a strategy or a plan in mind is pointless.

You need to have a strategy, you need to execute a plan that maximizes the efforts you’re putting in. You need to understand and have the infrastructure in place to generate leads and ultimately sales.

What does that mean?

If you’re posting on social media about your product or service, make sure the link you provide is tracked to your analytics, that way you can see how effective that post was.

You want to make sure you’re using the Google Campaign URL Builder, which is how you create the custom URL to track your marketing efforts through your Google Analytics account.

  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn
  • Buffer

You need to also make sure that if you’re driving traffic to your website from social media, that your landing page is optimized and hyper-focused on closing the deal.

Bottom line: Without a definitive plan for how you’re going to use social media, you probably won’t get the results that you want.

Let’s dig in.

Choose Your Platforms

Instead of trying to post on every social media platform out there, focus on the one or two that will have the most impact on your business.

In order to do this, you need to know who your customers are. Here are some questions to help you figure out what social media platform you should be using that will have the greatest impact on your business.

  • Where do they spend most of their time when it comes to social media?
  • Where do they like to interact with brands and businesses?
  • What sites influence them to purchase?
  • Who are the biggest influencers in your space and what platforms do they use?
